Emergency care for children includes pre hospital based acute care. Yet, the pediatric readiness of EMS agencies is variable. It is important that EMS agencies have the appropriate resources including equipment, training, policies, and oversight to be ready to care for acutely ill children.

The majority of children access emergency care from general EDs. A higher Pediatric Readiness score in these EDs has been linked to decreased mortality and better outcomes for children. The development of a pediatric facility recognition program has been linked to significantly higher Pediatric Readiness among hospitals who have developed voluntary programs.

The overall mission of the Missouri Emergency Medical Services for Children (MOEMSC) Program is to reduce pediatric morbidity and mortality due to acute illness and injury by building a strong, sustainable network of health care providers that promotes quality, evidenced-based emergency care for pediatric patients. This mission will be achieved through increased education opportunities, process improvement projects, and advocacy efforts.
